Cedar Springs and Mystic Shelter Tour January 2, 2010
Wednesday, December 9, 2009
Come join the RAF for a tour to Cedar Springs and Mystic Shelter along the rocky banks of the Devils River - considered the cleanest river in Texas. This mid-winter tour is popular for those who enjoy the cooler seasons for hiking. Also the winter lighting makes for great photographic opportunities. This tour does require that participants have their own high clearance and 4WD vehicle. The road to the site is rough with heavy brush - your car will get scratched. If you have questions about the suitability of your vehicle please email us at rockart01@aol.com The first site is an easy walk from the parking area. The second is just over a mile away. Getting there requires a steep descent over rough loose rocks to the level of the river. Once down by the river the hike is then over relatively level and open rock terraces along the river then into a rough rocky canyon for a short distance. This tour requires stamina, agility, and balance. Please be physically prepared for this hike. Wear sturdy shoes, layer your clothing according to the weather, and bring drinking water/lunch/snacks. Your guide for this tour will be Greg Williams. The evening prior and the morning of the tour you can reach Greg at 210-289-2626. The tour will meet at 9:00AM just west of Del Rio at the Chevron Station at the intersection of Hwy 90 and Hwy 277/377. Be prepared for a prompt 9:30 AM departure. There are no conveniences after this. Bring food, water, and have your vehicles gassed up. Remember to check your share tire for inflation. No pets. The Rock Art Foundation wishes to thank two private landowners for allowing us both excess along the river and entry to the property. We acknowledge their stewardship of these unique cultural resources and are grateful for their cooperation in allowing us access. This tour is not recommended for anyone with walking or balance issues and for children under 12 years of age. We will be in isolated locations where response to a medical emergency or injury will be difficult and lengthy. For the safety of the group, the RAF guide in charge of each tour will evaluate each individual’s ability to participate in the tour and may limit participation accordingly. The requested donation for this tour is $35 per person. All Rock Art Foundation tours must be paid in advance to insure your reservation. Please make your reservations by giving us your payment instructions at http://www.fellowpages.org/rockart/tours.cfm . You will receive acknowledgement of your reservation. Last minute reservations and walk-on’s can only be accepted depending on available tour space. Only those paid in advance are guaranteed a place on the tour. Cancellations with a full refund are accepted no later than 7 days prior to the tour. Cancellations on the part of the RAF or weather will be refunded in full – most tours are cancelled in the event of rain. An on-call list will be kept for tours which fill up and you will be notified of openings in order of your inquiry. Payment can also be made by check sent to The Rock Art Foundation, 18160 US Highway 281 North, Suite 108 – Box 257, San Antonio, TX, 78232.
