Meyers Springs Tour - September 5, 2009
Thursday, August 13, 2009
Meyers Springs, a major source of water in dry west Texas, has been a center for human activity for thousands of years. At the spring site ancient peoples left Pecos River style rock art. Then later native artists recorded the European contact with the indigenous peoples atop the older paintings. Still later the Seminole Scouts and local ranchers left their marks. This site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and today is privately owned. The Rock Art Foundation in stewardship with the landowner invites you for a tour to this very important rock art and historic site. Your guide for this tour will be Greg Williams. The tour will meet in Dryden, Texas, at the intersection of Hwy 90 and Hwy 349. Be there at 9:30am and be prepared for a prompt 10:00am departure. Be sure to bring everything you need for a day in the west Texas sun - water, lunch, and sunscreen. The drive to the ranch does not require any special vehicle; however, high clearance is recommended. Once there it is a short walk to the rock art panel. This is an excellent tour for young children. After seeing the rock art the tour will drive a short distant to the outpost of the Seminole Negro Indian Scouts who patrolled the western Texas frontier in the 1880’s and 90’s. The tour usually concludes by 3:00pm. Please be aware that there is a rapid growth in crime of all types along the Mexico/US border. Please be alert when visiting this area. For the most current information visit the State Department Travel Alert web site at: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_1766.html If you plan to visit Mexico please remember that the United States now requires that you have a valid U.S. passport or U.S. Passport Card to travel between the U.S. and Mexico, http://www.getyouhome.gov/html/lang_eng/eng_usp.html . Desert tours are not recommended for anyone with walking or balance issues and for children under 12 years of age. Parents are responsible for the supervision and safety of their children. We will be in isolated locations where response to a medical emergency or injury will be difficult and lengthy. For the safety of the group, the RAF guide in charge of each tour will evaluate each individual’s ability to participate in the tour and may limit participation accordingly. The requested donation for this tour is $35 per person. All Rock Art Foundation tours must be paid in advance to insure your reservation.
