Meyers Springs Tour May 26, 2012

Meyers Springs, a major source of water in dry west Texas, has been a center for human activity for thousands of years.  At the spring site ancient people left Pecos River style rock art.  Then later native artists recorded the European contact with the indigenous people atop the older paintings.  Still later the Seminole Scouts and local ranchers left their marks.  This site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and today is privately owned.  The Rock Art Foundation, in stewardship with the landowner, invites you for a tour to this very important rock art and historic site.

Your guide for this tour will be Ken Law, Rock Art Foundation Guide. The tour will meet in Dryden, Texas at the intersection of Hwy 90 and Hwy 349.  Be there at 9:30am and be prepared for a prompt 10:00am departure.   Be sure to bring everything you need for a day in the west Texas sun – water, lunch, hat and sunscreen. Hiking boots are not needed but are always a good idea. No pets please. Ken’s cell phone is 512.567.3210 although cell phone service in this area is not reliable.

 The 11 mile dirt ranch road does not require 4 wheel drive although a high clearance vehicle is recommended.  Rains can quickly wash out a road. Once there it’s a short walk to the rock art panel.  After seeing the rock art the tour will drive a short distance to the outpost of the Seminole Scouts who patrolled the western Texas frontier in the 1880’s and 90’s.  The tour usually concludes by 4:00pm.

 Meyers Springs is a remote location where there is no medical attention and cell phone service is rare.

 The requested donation for this tour is $35 per person. All Rock Art Foundation tours must be paid in advance to insure your reservation.  Please make your reservations no later than 7 days prior to the tour by giving us your payment instructions at http://www.fellowpages.org/rockart/tours.cfm . You will receive a payment/reservation confirmation. Cancellations with a full refund are accepted no later than 7 days prior to the tour.  Cancellations on the part of the RAF or weather will be refunded in full – most tours are cancelled in the event of rain.  Payment can also be made by check sent to The Rock Art Foundation, P.O.
