Lewis Canyon Petroglyph Site Tour May 1, 2010
Monday, April 5, 2010
Among the rock art of the lower Pecos region some of the most intriguing are the Lewis Canyon petroglyphs. On a horizontal rock surface above the Pecos River are scattered hundreds of images of snakes, bear tracks, deer, human figures, handprints, atlatls, geometric designs, bird tracks, and abstractions chipped into the limestone surface surrounding a small spring. There is also a small pictograph site and tinaja in a canyon just below the petroglyph site. To view some photos and information about these petroglyphs visit the RAF Rock Art Gallery at www.rockart.org and click on the images to see the text. Come join a RAF guide for a tour to this unique site. A minimum of ten participants will be required for this tour. Participants must have a high clearance vehicle to negotiate the 12 miles of rough ranch road to the site. Four-wheel drive in not required. Once there it is a short easy walk to the site. The tour will meet in Comstock, Texas, at 9:30am for a prompt 10:00am departure. The meeting location is the Desert Hills RV Park located about one mile west of the flashing light in Comstock on the south side of Highway 90. There are no conveniences after departing Comstock.
