Bonfire Shelter/Eagle Cave Members Only Tour - March 6, 2010
Tuesday, February 9, 2010
In the archaeological record of events occurring in the lower Pecos River area perhaps none are more important than the buffalo stampedes manipulated by early hunters in a narrow canyon near the present day town of Langtry. This site, once known as Ice Box Cave, is today called Bonfire Shelter. The Rock Art Foundation in cooperation with the local landowner invites you to tour this unique site. Come join RAF guide Jim Sievers to learn more about the name of this shelter, the ancient people who lived here, and to visit other sites within the canyon. The landowner has been known on occasion to join this tour and to impart his intimate knowledge of this fascinating place to visitors. This tour is only available to current members of the Rock Art Foundation. Other than membership there are no additional fees and advanced registration is required. Please make reservations by visiting http://www.fellowpages.org/rockart/tours.cfm . Meet your guide in the parking lot of Seminole Canyon State Park at 9:30 AM and be prepared for a prompt 10:00 AM departure. Any vehicle can travel to the site parking area. Bring your lunch and drinking water. Wear sturdy shoes and dress in layers according to the weather. The hike is into a very steep and rough canyon. Stamina, agility, and good balance are a must. You will be in a remote location where response to serious injuries and medical emergencies will be difficult and lengthy. Children must be fully mobile and able to travel this terrain on their own. No pets. Register early as this tour is limited to 25 participants and frequently fills up. If you have any questions about the tour or your ability please contact us. If your plans change after registration please let us know. For more information about Bonfire Shelter visit the Texas Beyond History website at http://www.texasbeyondhistory.net/bonfire/index.html.
